Daum launches VoIP in US through Lycos

South Korea’s second-largest Internet portal, Daum Communications Corp., announced the launch of Internet-based telephony services through Lycos Inc., its American subsidiary. The statement was released Wednesday.

Daum affirmed in the statement that Lycos will provide the U.S. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services. Lycos enters a market filled with high-profile portal operators such as Skype, Yahoo, AOL, Google and EarthLink. To prevail in such a tough market, Lycos plans to offer differentiated service.

Daum says that Lycos will focus on offering multimedia services involving VoIP services, including free internet calls from PC to PC, landline or mobile.

Lycos was originally acquired by Daum in 2004 in an attempt to penetrate the US market.
