Sony Pushes the Future of 3G Phones

In the mobile communication industry, trends can change in the blink of an eye, and like SMS messaging and camera phones before it, 3G cellular broadband services are promising to be the next tool of rapid growth.

Wireless carriers around the world are starting to upgrade their networks to incorporate 3G technologies, allowing customers to download content onto their phones at much faster rates.

Sony Ericsson’s president of Mobile Communications, Miles Flint, says that the best way to identify trends in the cell phone industry is to look at the past of the personal computer.

“I think the more important trend, what we see coming to the mobile market, is a replication of what we’ve seen on the fixed-broadband-ADSL world,” Flint explained in a recent interview. “We really are seeing the beginning of a world of mobile broadband Internet.”

The consequences of such a trend are huge for the industry at large, putting the power of wireless internet access into the palms of cell phone users. This will give the wireless industry a much wider potential reach, and trigger a sort of “gold rush” for 3G data customers. This will in turn, however, inspire more competition, and force carriers to make special effort to keep existing customers.
