Nortel Ranked Number One

Recent reports by Dell’Oro Group, Synergy Research Group, and Infonetics listed Nortel as number one in the VoIP Market. Dell’Oro cited Nortel as having “sustained a significant market share lead in the global next generation networks (NGN) carrier market.”


While the market grew 55 percent during 2005, Nortel held a 21.5 percent share for the entire year, along with a 26 percent share of the market for the fourth quarter. Dell’Oro said that “the global leader in enterprise IP telephony line shipments with 23.3 percent share for the fourth quarter of 2005.”

Synergy Research Group commented with equal esteem noting that Nortel held a 19 percent share of the market based on revenue and an 18 percent share based on ports shipped during the year. Nortel also ranked high in Synergy Research Group’s categories of softswitch and overall media gateway ports, VoIP and voice-over-ATM gateways, and enterprise telephony ports shipped.

In the press release, Jeremy Duke, Synergy Research Group’s president and CEO states that, “Nortel continues to gain momentum in the carrier VoIP market as reflected in Synergy’s Q4 2005 market share reports… By investing in VoIP well ahead of many of the incumbent switch vendors, Nortel is reaping the rewards of well placed timing and execution.”
In the press release, Nortel said its VoIP systems have been designed for easy transition to IMS; all the company’s communications servers provide IP Multimedia and SIP call session control.

Infonetics noted Nortel, holding 19 percent of the global market, 26 percent of the North American market, as the leader in enterprise telephony line shipments for 2005 as a whole and during the fourth quarter.

In the press release, Infonetics analyst Matthias Mackowinski noted: “Most new PBX system deployments today are using some degree of VoIP technology, and with a portfolio of both voice and data networking products, Nortel is one of the few companies that can offer all the elements for VoIP deployments.”
