Vonage Offers 911 Service

Vonage, current leader in the Internet phone shuffle, recently announced 911 service.

As high speed internet is becoming a norm, VoIP is growing rapidly.  The market is expected to keep making massive jumps until around 2010, when it will start to level out because just about everyone will probably be using some kind of Internet telephony service.
However, even with its ease-of-use and ridiculously cheap cost, VoIP might not be all the hype it generates.
It’s not a very well known fact that when using VoIP, 911 is almost useless.

If you dial 911 from your home phone, the dispatcher on the other end will know exactly how to find you. But if you dial 911 from most Internet-based phone services, the dispatcher won’t know exactly where you are. Some VoIP companies have already hooked up with full 911 service, but for now, most other companies are working to fit the emergency service into their devices.

Internet phone leader Vonage recently announced that about two thirds of its customers have the enhanced 911 service.
