TiVo on Wednesday said it has signed a deal with startup Brightcove that will allow TiVo subscribers to receive television-like programs delivered over the Internet.
TiVo did not disclose the terms of its agreement with Brightcove, a privately held, Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Internet TV outfit that helps programmers syndicate shows across the Web and collect revenue.
The companies said that the pact would offer an automated method for almost any publisher of broadband video using Brightcove’s Internet TV services to distribute content to TiVo subscribers and potentially make money through advertising, subscription plans, or pay-per-view.
Initially, all content will be offered for free to TiVo subscribers and may carry advertising within the content.
TiVo is aiming to differentiate itself from digital recorder services offered by cable operators, even as it seeks to land more cable distribution deals.
